Betsy Devos has somehow earned the reputation as overly meek or polite. While that can be some of her character traits, it is a mistake to underestimate her ability to get what she needs for the people who flourish under her leadership. She is an educational dynamo and she has never backed down from a fight when it came to the kids that she ruthlessly campaigns for. There is nothing more important to her than those children, even if it means that she has to sacrifice growing political relationships to ensure those children come first in all of her decisions.
Her work continues to be inspirational to this day. In fact, she very publicly disagreed with the recent decision about transgender rates and bathroom issues in public school systems. While she did not win that particular fight, she was willing to stand against it no matter the cost. She showed her public disapproval at that decision, but she also knew that she needed to be around to fight for other issues in the future. Betsy DeVos knows how to take a loss and turn it into something that all parties can be happy with. She believes that this can be done with the public school system as well.
While some Americans don’t see it, the public school system has been in a bit of a decline for a number of years. In some ways, these schools don’t even add up to European counterparts. Students are learning much less than other students from different countries. They are not retaining as much and their scores are also much lower. For Betsy DeVos, she takes this personally because she wants American schools to be the best in the world. This is a reasonable goal, American schools use to garner much more respect for their education. Now it seems as though, many school systems are simply trying to get by with the student base that they have and pass tests. This is a worry some attitude and it can lead to a lot of inconsistencies on a national scale when it comes to testing standards.
Betsy DeVos believes that the answer to this problem is to privatize the entire system. The public school system is no longer working, so maybe it’s time for a private system to step up and take its place. Students would still be able to attend school, simply they would attend publicly funded private school systems or attend under scholarships. Parents may also have the option to pay a tuition rate for schools that are doing much better. There are also charter school systems that operate as public school systems and do not charge a tuition. There are growing options becoming available for parents they just need to have the public school veil pulled from their eyes. Betsy DeVos will continue to use her position to spread education about these alternative methods and still do significant work to the public school system. She is in a position where she is pushing for one system while trying to correct another, that will require all of her political expertise.
