The popular electronic duo known as The Chainsmokers have finally released a new song, the first in nine months. This nine month hiatus is an especially long time for the group, seeing as they were releasing a new song almost every month in their first year of major mainstream popularity. Ever since their formation in 2012 Drew Taggart and Alex Pall have been regularly writing and producing music, and have been performing regularly since 2013. “Sick Boy” is the newest release by this dynamic duo and it has a surprisingly new and intriguingly dark sound.
The new sound being introduced by Drew and Alex is the beginning of an era. Since the group is all about making music that mirrors current events and emotions, it is fitting that their new sound is a bit darker. Drew confirmed this in an interview saying, “The next topic is a little bit darker, but I think that’s the tone of society right now. Our stuff is always a reflection of what’s going on in our lives and the world around us.” People all over the world have felt a change in tone over the past year, and The Chainsmokers want to express these new emotions through their music.
After the groups intensely quick rise to the top over the past years, the two men have felt extreme pressure in regards to the media’s constant watch and the many expectations that derive from public perception. This lead them to reflect on the scrutiny that all people, especially the young, have to deal with on a daily basis. The idea that everything we do is on a platform for all to see ultimately lead to the birthing of their new and darker direction. The Chainsmokers want to shed new light on the stresses we all have to deal with, but to also relate to their fans and listeners on a deeper level in spite of that stress.
